By Mayor Harold Schott
The City of La Vernia will hold a Special Election on November 8, 2011, for the reauthorization of local sales and use tax in the city of La Vernia at the rate of one-fourth of one percent to continue providing revenue for maintenance and repair of municipal streets.
A one-cent local sales tax increase was approved by the voters in La Vernia in November, 2007 with one-half cent dedicated for Economic Development, one-quarter cent for property tax reduction and one-quarter cent dedicated for maintenance and repair of city streets. The portion dedicated for street repair and maintenance must be re-authorized per State Law by election every four years. This is not a new tax. This quarter cent has been collected for 4 years and is dedicated solely for the repair and maintenance of streets in the city limits of La Vernia. The collection of this tax allows the city to free up other revenue in the general fund without having to budget additional monies for street repair and maintenance. It also creates the opportunity for people who shop, worship and attend school in La Vernia but live outside the city limits to contribute to the repair and maintenance of the city streets they use daily.
Early voting will be held at the La Vernia City Hall located at 102 E. Chihuahua Street on October 24 - November 4, 2011 from 8:00am to 5:00pm, and November 1-2, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. On November 8, 2011, election day, voting will take place at the La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department Station located at 12190 US Hwy 87 W. and the polls are open 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
NOVEMBER 8th IS ELECTION DAY. PLEASE VOTE | | |
